We are a society that struggles with nutrition and exercise which leads to fad diets and overeating. We are also, collectively, getting poor sleep or not enough sleep. The impact of these problems impact us individually but it also impacts us collectively. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police reported crashes each year are caused primarily by drowsy driving and that such crashes result in more than 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses

Individually, with poor diet and sleeping habits, sleep apnea cases have increased along with our waistlines. The medical condition afflicts at least 25 million adults in the U.S. as of 2014. It is now estimated that 26 percent of adults between the ages of 30 and 70 years have sleep apnea, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

But, sleep apnea is only part of the problem. Poor sleeping habits are now common in day-to-day life. Americans currently average 6.8 hours of sleep at night, down more than an hour from 1942.

Combine that with diets and long hours with work and family related demands, we are a nation of zombies.

Now we can’t fix this overnight. Changing habits must be a long term approach. Introducing exercise into your daily routine, no matter how short or moderate, is the first steps to long term change. Exercise has shown to increase energy levels, improve sleep, reduce stress, and help with depression. When bogged down with work and stress, exercise is the first victim to be removed from the schedule, but results have shown that it might be the best thing for you when life becomes stressful.

Where to start

If you are severely overweight, light impact exercise is best. Swimming is a great activity and easy on your joints. If you would like to incorporate a fitness routine in the pool there are several online sites that can help you with this.

For San Tan Valley residents, some communities have pools available to you such as Johnson Ranch and Encanterra. For those without access to a pool, the YMCA in Copper Basin has a pool and fitness classes for the pool available.

If you are carrying a few extra pounds, or looking to get back into shape, you have plenty of options available. From bodyweight exercises to develop a basic foundation of strength to weight lifting routines. Additionally, we are lucky enough to have San Tan Mountain Regional Park located close by that enable you quick access to great hiking. The hiking trails range from easy hikes to long, vigorous hikes. As we progress with our column we will touch upon different activities and how to begin your path to fitness, local trainers, local classes, and local fitness centers within the San Tan Valley area.


This is a hot topic with some. From low carb, to avoiding certain foods, to food timing, there are diets for nearly every belief out there. We aren’t going to tell you which you should do, but we will try to provide a straight forward approach about what nutrition is and what you can expect from certain diets to allow you to make the best decision for what would work for you.

A great starting point is meal prepping. This will allow you to have meals ready ahead of time which will minimize your desire to go out for breakfast or lunch that usually results in fast food that tends to be packed with calories while low on nutritional value. Preparing your meals a week in advance seems daunting at first, but with a little planning, it can be quick and easy.

Improved Sleep

This is harder to do than just simply going to bed early. Schedules and responsibilities can be time consuming. Even after everything is done, many of us have picked up bad sleeping habits such as keeping the TV on or having a mobile device within arms reach that results in us being detracted even once we get into bed.

Start with keeping the TV off if you have one in your bedroom and placing your phone, tablets, or laptops away from the bed. If you use your phone as an alarm clock, think about purchasing an alarm clock to minimize the temptation of using your phone.

When to Start

Changing your lifestyle doesn’t need to be a massive undertaking. Even small changes can make a difference and help you move to a long term goal.
