Last week was the first week of action for our local high school football teams. ALA Ironwood, Poston Butte, and San Tan Foothills all played at home while Combs had a road trip to Cottonwood to play Mingus High School. Though all of our local teams had rough weeks it was great to see the boys back on the gridiron. Below are breakdowns of each game.

Poston Butte Broncos

The Broncos had a tough time against the Saguaro Sabercats out of Scottsdale last weekend going down 48-3. The only points for the Broncos came from a second-quarter field goal, while the Sabercats piled on points all night. Up next for the Broncos is tonight’s Battle for Ironwood (that’s what we are calling it) as they head all the way down the street to take on Combs for the first time in years.

Here are a few photos from last weeks game

ALA Ironwood Warriors

The Warriors also had a tough test last week as they took on fellow ALA School ALA Queen Creek. Last Friday was the Warriors first trip to class 3A ball, and a big step up from last years competition, and it showed from the very start and Queen Creek put 14 on the board in the first quarter, 10 in the second, and a massive 31 in the third, they finished it up with 13 in the fourth while Ironwood was only able to manage 3 points for the game. The final was 68-3, Ironwood takes on another ALA team as they head to Gilbert tonight.

San Tan Foothills Sabercats

The Sabercats had the closest game of the week last week out of all San Tan Valley Schools falling 33-14 to Odyssey Institute. The Sabercats kept it a close game in the first with a 14-14 tie at the end of one, that was all Foothills could do though as Odyssey won the next three quarters 19-0 total. Your Sabercats are in Eloy tonight to take on Santa Cruz Valley.

Combs Coyotes

Combs was the only San Tan Valley team to start on the road this year as they traveled to Cottonwood to take on Mingus, and it was a tough game from the start as Mingus put 25 on the board in the first quarter. The Coyotes fought back in the second with a tied quarter at 14-14, but it was too little too late as Mingus cruised to a 53-14 victory. Don’t miss Combs tonight though as they play in the battle of Ironwood at home against their down street rivals Poston Butte. The game kicks off at 7:00 and you wouldn’t want to miss a second of this one!
