JOB INFORMATION

Under general supervision of the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program Manager, the AIS Wildlife Technician will provide office support for the AIS program and assist with research, including review of popular and technical fisheries publications and review of AIS program data collection. The Technician will assist in development and implementation of public interaction activities and reporting.  Assists with AIS program abatement and watercraft inspections and decontaminations and also the maintenance of data collection and databases. This position communicates directly with the public, collecting and recording fisheries and/or AIS program data. Operates, maintains and repairs a variety of specialized AIS program equipment and may operate a variety of water and land vehicles. May serve as a team leader for interns, volunteers and/or authorized agents.  Performs other duties as assigned.  This assignment is a temporary appointment set to end no later than November 29, 2019 or sooner depending on project needs.

Wildlife Managers are field-oriented, commissioned peace officers responsible for conserving and protecting wildlife resources throughout the State of Arizona.  This unique position incorporates law enforcement and biology and requires a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Description of Duties: Law Enforcement duties include conducting law enforcement patrols to ensure compliance with A.R.S Title 17 (game and fish laws), Title 5 (watercraft laws), Title 28 (Off highway vehicle enforcement), Title 13 (State criminal code), Arizona Game and Fish Commission Rules and Orders, and all other State/Federal laws as necessary; conducting investigations and securing evidence related to wildlife, watercraft, OHV violations and other A.R.S. statutes when necessary and applicable; providing public safety and completing requirements necessary to obtain and maintain Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training (AZPOST) peace officer certification. Successful completion of Arizona Peace Officer certification and Department post-academy training is required.

Under the direction of the Statewide Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program Coordinator, this AIS Specialist will be responsible for conducting, planning, analyzing, and organizing professional aquatic wildlife management activities or studies in the office, field or laboratory.  This position will develop and utilize best practices in managing the aquatic wildlife populations and their habitats as they pertain to aquatic invasive species and develops and implements public interaction campaigns and activities concerning invasive species abatement and to watercraft inspections and decontamination.  

Develops training based on currently accepted watercraft inspection and decontamination protocols, leads and performs trainings and provides ongoing technical support to personnel and third party authorized agents on behalf of the Department. Develops and/or reviews recommendations and reports on aquatic wildlife research, habitat evaluations, special studies and/or environmental inventories and estimates, utilizing statistical methods and techniques in compiling and analyzing data collected. Maintain and manage watercraft inspection and decontamination records through a regional database.  Leads subordinate staff, interns and/or volunteers to complete assigned work projects and may oversee programs and/or projects related to aquatic invasive species.  

This position will also lead or assist the AIS Program Coordinator with Hazard Analysis and Critical Point (HACCP) Planning trainings required for personnel performing aquatic field work and review HACCP plans.  Operates and maintains a variety of specialized equipment, such as mobile decontamination units and various watercraft and 4×4 vehicles.  Collaborates with local jurisdictions, other agency staff, and external stakeholders to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.  Delivers public presentations and participates in Departmental outreach efforts and public information requests.  Reviews popular and technical publications to maintain proficiency in the invasive species specialty field.  Schedule may work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and/or at night and include overnight travel, working and camping for extended periods of time in Arizona’s weather and geographic extremes.  Performs other duties as assigned.
