The Tonto National Forest closure order has been updated and has reopened the following trailheads:

  • Treasure Loop
  • Prospector’s View 
  • Jacob’s Crosscut 
  • First Water
  • Broadway 
  • Hieroglyphic
  • Dons Camp
  • Carney Springs
  • Peralta

A seven-mile stretch of State Route 88 near Apache Trail that was affected by the Woodbury Fire remains closed because of a severe flooding risk, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The closed stretch of road is unpaved and runs several miles east of Tortilla Flat to just west of the Apache Lake Marina turnoff from Roosevelt Lake.

There is a limit of 100 hikers for each night, so please call in advance to reserve your space: 480-982-4485. Join us for a guided 2.5-mile hike on Jacob’s Crosscut Trail at the base of the mysterious Superstition Mountains. Hikers should dress appropriately and wear trail shoes or boots. Please bring a flashlight in case of cloudy conditions (No headlamps please). Some parts of the trail are rocky and uneven with occasional steep grades (elevation gain: 120’). Participants should be in good health with no walking or night vision difficulties. Trail is NOT suitable for strollers or walkers. No pets, please. Meet at Palo Verde.

Come join us for a brief informative talk about scorpions with a ranger, and then head out into the desert darkness in search of scorpions! Bring your camera, a flashlight, and water! Wear sturdy closed toed shoes, and bring a black light if you have one. No pets please.
