Holes seem to be everywhere you look in the desert, whether on the ground or in the cacti. Join our Ranger for a fun talk on how these holes might have been made and which critter might live inside! Then, meet some of the animals in our Critter Room and find out what types of holes their relatives call home out in the desert. Meet inside the Nature Center. 10-11am.

If you’re looking to learn new skills, increase your confidence on the bike, or simply enjoy the sport like never before, our MTB 101 class is just for you. This is the perfect introduction that teaches all the basic skills needed to ride in the desert & mountain terrain.  Get to know your bike and riding equipment, learn how to balance, shift, and control your speed with proper braking, and familiarize yourself with riding protocol and safety. This introductory 30 min class is also followed by a short 3-4 mile ride to practice what you just learned. A helmet is required for safety reasons and please bring plenty of water, and an extra tube and tools to change a flat tire. If you’re a mountain bike beginner and have never ridden on the desert trails, you don’t want to miss this event! Meet at the Main Trailhead. 6-8am.

Meet some of the Animal Ambassadors in our Critter Room and cool off with an entertaining movie inside our Nature Center. Today’s Movie: Secrets of the Sonoran Desert. Meet the inhabitants of the Sonoran Desert – evolving, adapting, always in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Javelina, roadrunners, Gila monsters, boojum trees, ocotillos – all here for you to learn about and enjoy. No other desert in the world encompasses such an incredible diversity. From thunderstorms and flash floods to snow on the saguaros, witness the spectacular sights and sounds of the Sonoran Desert. We’re the nocturnal animals of the desert and we like to hide.  Help Ranger B find us if you can!  If you would like to learn about us and enjoy a night walk in the desert, then join Ranger B as he takes you on this exciting 1-mile/1-hour walk along the Merkle Trail.  This trail accommodates wheelchairs and strollers.  Please bring water, a flashlight, and closed-toe shoes.  No pets, please.  Meet at Area 6.  As a bonus, join our “All About Ants” program inside our Nature Center at 6pm, and our snake feeding at 7pm at no extra cost!

Families, are you looking for something cool to do this summer?  Grab a mat, pillow, or blanket, and watch a fun animal movie inside our cool Nature Center!  These movies are family-friendly and fun for all ages.  Snacks are available for purchase, however you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks – no glass bottles, please.  In today’s movie:  “Fly Away Home,” ten-year-old Amy discovers a nest of orphaned goose eggs and brings them home with her.  How can she help them?  What will happen?  Come to Usery Park and find out!  NOTE:  At the end of the movie, one lucky person will win a free family four pack (4 free tickets to the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Phoenix Water Park – a $180 value!!).
