Discover the beauty of the Sonoran Desert at night as we hike under the light of the moon. During this 2.2 mile stroll along the moderate terrain of Moonlight and Stargazer Trails we’ll listen for the sounds of wildlife and embrace the nighttime atmosphere. Our pace will be slow to help enjoy the surroundings. What to bring: Closed-toe shoes, water, flashlight. No pets, please. Meet at the Main Trailhead map kiosk/picnic table. 8-9pm.

Beginner Skill Level Mountain Bike Ride

Join us for an exciting beginner mountain bike ride among the beautiful San Tan Mountains. This 5.5-mile ride is open to all ages and skill levels. Our local experts will be available to help you understand your bike’s features and learn the ins and outs of safe riding. “No Rider Left Behind” is our policy, because we ride together in a group. This is your opportunity to be around others who are passionate about mountain biking as a sport to have fun and get some exercise. Helmets are required. Under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Essentials: water, helmet, extra tube, tools to change a flat tire. Meet at the San Tan Trail sign at the main trailhead. 8-10am.

Homeschool students will learn all about fossils – how they form, how they are found and excavated and what we can learn from them. We will talk about paleontology and see real fossil specimens from the land and sea. Includes indoor discussion and activities, a take-home craft project and a visit to our outdoor dig site to find and prepare our special “fossils”. Maximum 20 participating students. What to bring: Closed-toe shoes, water, hat, sunscreen. Meet inside the Visitor Center. 10-11:30am.

Join our park ranger for this fun, scenic hike along our newest park trail!  This easy 3-mile hike meanders through a forest of saguaros and catches great views of the surrounding mountains.  Please bring water and closed-toe shoes.  Meet at the Nature Center.

Kids love to see wild animals, but where are they hiding this time of year?  Join Ranger B on this exciting 1.5-mile desert adventure as we sneak to the secret places where the park’s wildlife is often seen.  Feel free to bring a camera or binoculars with you.  Please bring water, a hat, and closed-toe shoes.  Meet at Trailhead Staging.

Join volunteer “birder Vera” for a morning of discovering the birds of the desert. Learn how to identify the birds in your backyard, the proper use of binoculars, where to find birds in our area, and then take a guided walk through the desert to practice new skills. Bring binoculars if you have them, appropriate clothing, water, and enthusiasm, but no dogs or small children please. Meet at the Native Plant Trail parking area on the right before reaching the ranger station for orientation.
