easter tournament

On Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31, The American Leadership Academy Ironwood Warriors Varsity Softball team took part in the annual Canyon Athletic Association Spring Classic Softball Tournament at Salt River High School.

The Lady Warriors finished the weekend as the tournament Runner-Up with 3 wins and 2 losses overall and brought home the first softball trophy in program history. On Friday, the Warriors dropped their first game 9-5 against Imagine Prep Surprise and then bounced back and beat ALA Gilbert 12-2 in the nightcap. Saturday the Warriors beat the host team Salt River 19-1 to finish pool play with 2 wins and 1 loss earning them the #2 seed in the knockout round and a bye to the semifinals.

In the semifinal game, the Warriors faced the #1 ranked team in the state for CAA Division 1 Desert Heights Prep. The Warriors jumped out to an 8-1 lead early and held on to win 9-4 and move on to the championship game and a rematch with ALA Gilbert. The championship game was a back and forth battle early but some defensive miscues allowed Gilbert to build a lead that the Warriors could not catch. ALA Gilbert ended up winning 11-6 and tournament champions.

This was the first tournament in program history that the Warriors took part in and Head Coach Pete Gammill said, “Our goal was to compete and bring home a trophy and also to have the team bond and come together. We accomplished both our goals and I could not be happier”.

The Warriors were led by strong pitching performances from all three starters Senior Ari Pearson and 8th graders Olivia

Gammill and Leanna San Miguel. Offensively the Warriors were led by Shaylee Verdine, Breanna Swaney and Alona Luna but the team as a whole hit well all weekend.

The Warriors, with a regular season record of 5-2, now head to the second half of their season looking to make the state playoffs.
